There isn’t a day goes by but we are being persuaded to do something or other. Restaurants ask us to visit them; movie reviews ask us to go see the movies in question. The effort to influence people is present in all walks of life, so it’s easy to actually take it for granted.
The technique of trying to influence people so that they accept certain ideas or become ready to act in certain ways is recognized as psychology.
There are some clear techniques that the Psychology of Persuasion uses. Here is a list of them:
* Create a need: when you do this, or when you add to an already existing need a new twist, you are employing some basic psychology by getting to people’s need for love or security or respect of self-fulfillment.
o Appeal to social needs: when you do this, you are making sure that people will observe famous celebrities and make them look like they have something in common with your targets. This happens when, for example, a TV ad implies that if you buy a certain product, you are going to be like the celebrity who approves it. This kind of TV ad utilizes an immensely appealing persuasion.
o Applying loaded words/images: when you do this, you utilize nothing but positive words or images to advance your products.
Inducing beliefs or values in people is what the psychology of persuasion does best. This way the things discussed above can be put to use to manipulate people’s thoughts and actions. The word “psychology” actually comes from Greek and it means “study of the soul.” The soul is the essential person, so in this branch of psychology importance is placed on pleasure and pain. These are great motivators and influence your values and the acquisition of new skills. And this leads to logical conclusions: everyone wants to feel pleasure and avoid pain.
This is one way of leading people to an experience of general expectations. If there is a commonality in this, then people can be led to be willing to buy things they desire and salespeople can make more sales.
This kind of psychology is also utilized as a main persuasion technique by politicians, corporate bosses, and even ministers of different churches. Even non-experts can welcome how applying these techniques are all in the realm of what is practical and even reasonable.
Even everyday life can use this kind of persuasion. This happens when certain stimuli cause us to react in certain specific ways. This way others can be talked into adopting notions or even actions in everyday life. There is, however, a danger in having this kind of manipulation be used by those who will try to deceive you. But if you understand the Psychology of Persuasion, you can protect yourself from this kind of manipulation.
